“Vieux Farka Toure’s group is the best fucking rock band in the world” – Don Was (Producer: Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan)

“Mali has a new guitar God, and his name is Vieux Farka Toure” – FADER

Vieux Farka Toure was born in Niafunké, Mali in 1981. He is the son of legendary Malian guitar player Ali Farka Toure, who died in 2006.

Fresh off opening the World Cup and bringing down houses on 4 continents last year, Vieux Farka Touré is poised to become Africa’s preeminent axe-man. Vieux Farka Touré’s career in music would never have happened if his illustrious parent, African blues legend Ali Farka Touré, had his way. Ali felt that the music business was a harsh place to work and preferred that Vieux enlist in the army. But young Vieux, destined for … Read More »

A festival celebrating the art of graphic storytelling, illustration, comics, animation and music
Friday 4 November – Saturday 5 November 2016

As Graphic enters into it’s 6th edition, it continues to champion and draw light on the worlds leading (and underground) artists from the worlds of comics, music, animation and film. It’s a privilege to work on this unique event with my co-curator Ben Marshall and the Sydney Opera House team.

Every year when programming Graphic we are lucky enough to have multiple moments when we get the chills. Hair standing on end, adrenaline coursing through our system in the realisation that something very special is coming together. Something new and never before seen. A new act of artistic creation, an idea being brought to life or something that has been years in the making coming to fruition.

We’re very proud … Read More »

Iceland’s modern master of composition debuts in Australia

Jóhann Jóhannsson (Iceland)

We are very happy to welcome Jóhann to Australian shores for the very first time. Jóhann has been making a SERIOUS stir in the composition world with his soundtrack to the film Sicario receiving an Oscar nomination, his second year in a row after last years nomination for his score to The Theory of Everything. As well as writing for film, Jóhann writes for dance and performs his own musical scores live.

Jóhann Jóhannsson’s stately, slow-building and hauntingly melodic music, which frequently combines electronics with classical orchestrations, has been quietly bewitching listeners since he released his first genre defining solo record Englabörn in 2002. Although mostly instrumental, Johann´s work often involves complex narratives, which often deal with man´s relationship with the world of machines and decaying and obsolete technology.

Jóhann joins us briefly in Australia, working with Adelaide’s Zephyr Quartet to present his score … Read More »

Germany’s master of prepared piano returns

Posted on February 19th, by Jordan in News, Tours. Comments Off on Germany’s master of prepared piano returns

We are proud to present the return of Germay’s prodigiously talented master of the prepared piano, Hauschka.

Direct from Germany comes Hauschka, the worlds foremost exponent of the prepared piano.  By placing tins, gaffa tape, bottlecaps, ping pong balls and more inside the piano and adding effects, Hauschka transforms the instrument into an electronic orchestra. Hauschka is currently co-composing the score for the US-production Lion together with Dustin O’Halloran. With numerous collaborations in the art and orchestral world and many new works prepared and underway, Haushcka never ceases to amaze with his beautifully crafted, multi-faceted artistic output.

Debashish Bhattacharya (India)

Debashish Bhattacharya is considered, by many, to be the most accomplished slide guitarist alive today. His guru, Brij Bhushan Khabra, is considered the father of Indian classical guitar, indeed he was the first artist to play Hindustani classical music on slide guitar. In 1933 slide guitar came from Hawaii to India (Kolkata ,hometown of Debashish). Debashish learned Hawaiian guitar in early childhood, creating his unique technique and was considered a genius when he was ten. His further studies with Pt Brij channeled his knowledge into a mastery of the instrument with a direct emotional connection.

Japan’s masters of funk return!

Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro (Japan)

Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro. Bit of a tongue-twister, yeah? But there’s nothing complicated about MMK’s super heavyweight funk. Combining the rawest, deepest soulful grooves, the fast and furious energy of rock and roll, and laying it all down in the classiest of funk manners, these six super-dapper gentlemen have been creating a storm around the world with their irresistible new take on how to make people dance.

Mountain Mocha Kilimanjaro took Australia by storm on their debut tour in 2009/2010 supporting the release of their debut self-titled album, selling out every show on pre sales alone and earning rave reviews for their live performances through performing at Sydney Festival, Peats Ridge & Woodford Folk Festivals, and at their own headline shows along the East Coast, Melbourne and Adelaide.

They made a triumphant return to Australia in 2012 with the release … Read More »

Hauschka (Germany) Debut Australian tour

Posted on September 9th, by Jordan in News, Tours. Comments Off on Hauschka (Germany) Debut Australian tour

The pioneering German composer and experimental musician Hauschka is pleased to announce a five date AU tour for November, 2015 in support of his breathtaking new album Abandoned City. Volker Bertelmann – known best these days as HAUSCHKA – is one of the most recognisable 21st Century proponents of what is known as prepared piano (one whose sound is altered by the insertion of alien objects between or upon its strings, hammers and dampers).
HAUSCHKA studied classical piano from the age of nine and despite nine years of classical training, his interests were never as pure as the tutelage he received. With early public forays in the major label hip hop act “God’s Favourite Dog” and the Drum ‘n Bass quintet called Nonex, HAUSCHKA has always been both instinctive and fuelled by a love of rhythm.

At the turn of the century, HAUSCHAK’s interests … Read More »
