Tangents Announce National Tour

Tangents Announce National Tour

Following latest single ‘Lake George‘, recently dubbed “a world teeming with quiet musical contemplation” by Pitchfork with support via BBC6, Triple R, RTRFM, Apple Music Jazz and more, Sydney-based “post-everything” quintet Tangents today announce the of launch their forthcoming album ‘New Bodies‘ via national tour this July and August, including dates at Bellingen Winter Music Festival. ‘New Bodies‘ is out June 15 via Temporary Residence Ltd.

Experimenting with a traditional live format for the first official time, Tangents will unfurl ‘New Bodies‘ before audiences in its recorded form, stitched together by the skittering pulses and curving sighs of improvisation that are quintessential to the band. Across their eleven dates in July, August and September that span six states and territories, Tangents will launch their much-anticipated album, supported by local artists who share their exploratory spirit such as Maria Moles & Adam Halliwell, Assad, Last Days Of Kali, Grievous Bodily Calm, Harmony, Godtet and many more.

Following a year of touring with labelmates MONO and peers Tortoise, New Bodies‘ is set to be a continuation of Tangents‘ rummage through countless varieties of electronics, rock, dub, noise, and free improv jazz that defines the group’s acclaimed aesthetic. A spacious, plucked cello gives way to a minimalist breakbeat tableau resting over rhythmic prepared piano; a staid electronic groove is gradually absorbed into washes of frenzied improv; staccato synths are woven into tumbling avant-rock; and shimmering free drums phase over static loops of piano, guitar and cello.

“free floating new jazz… absolutely mind blowing. It really is just wild, isn’t it?”

– Mary Anne Hobbs, BBC6

“Tangents artfully mix acoustic instrumental and electronics in pieces that combine improvisation with careful processing. At their best, they bring to mind Can, Tortoise, Four Tet, and The Necks.”
– Pitchfork

“The quintet are so comfortable working with jazz, folk music, post-rock and electronic music that the track comfortably hangs in a space between then all.”
– FACT

“An incredibly refreshing listen.”
– AllMusic
