Tjupurru
Tjupurru is a proud descendant of the Djabera Djabera tribe of the West Australia Kimberleys. He moved to Cairns (North Queensland) where he first heard the didj music of Gondwanaland. Tjupurru plays a unique slide Didjeridu; named “The Didjeribone” because it can slide through different notes and tones - a cross between a didj and a trombone. The way it expands on what you can do with a traditional didj is just phenomenal. Essentially it makes just one instrument a didjeridu orchestra... He picks up his sound through a device called the “Face Bass”, a seismic microphone implanted inside his mouth. With the addition of sampling and electronic effects, Tjupurru has enabled himself to perform as a “one man band”… creating live samples and looping them to create songs and soundscapes that criss cross most musical genres.
Since being uncovered at The Big Sound Festival in Brisbane, Tjupurru has supported Kaki King (USA), Leo (France), Babylon Circus (France), Rodrigo Y Gabriela and many more. He performed at the Jazz in the Domain in front of 120,000 people collaborating with the world renowned percussionist Airto Moreira (Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Quincy Jones etc..) and has been invited to appear at festivals across Australia, New Caledonia, Japan and the USA. His debut EP was recorded with legendary producer, Buchman (Blue King Brown, Whitlams, Macromantics). It was taken up by tastemaker station KCRW in Los Angeles and this resulted in thousands of online sales and his first LA gig being a sell out. Tjupurru’s music proves that new levels of ingenuity and innovation are set from the creative Indigenous element of Australia.
Tjupurru visits hundreds of schools across Australia and the rest of the world. He has presented talks and workshops at Universities, TEDx Sydney and many cultural centres accross the globe. He shares his personal journey, the history of his culture and the Djabera Djabera Tribe to instill a deeper understanding of Indigenous culture.
Tjupurru’s latest album, Global Grove, is producedby Lee Groves (Gwen Stefani, Black Eyed Peas, Marilyn Manson). This new release undoubtedly reaches new levels of musicality and creativity.
